Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, I'm an all-around communications
guy who does a little bit of everything: directing, writing,
cinematography, and graphic design. (I don't do taxes, though. Leave
that to the accountants).
I currently work as the Director of Communications at Warner Pacific College, a small Christian liberal arts college in SE Portland. My main gig is single handedly writing, editing, photographing, and designing the college's magazine "The Experience." In the midst of the requisite campus news and baby announcements, I work to write thought-provoking articles that represent well the ideals of a liberal arts college. I'm particularly drawn to stories of people who have overcome extreme obstacles (such as the death of a child or the ravages of civil war) with their faith intact, albeit transformed.
I also write copy for brochures, advertisements, press releases, and the college's website. Being a one-man communications staff is a lot like those game shows where the contestant gets 30 seconds inside a chamber to catch as many dollar bills being blown around. I grab what I can, make sense of it, and bundle it up in a publication that will catch the eyes of alumni sorting through their mail.
I also produce promotional videos, both for the college and on the side through my own production company. I've focused on non-profits because that's where the work has come from, but I've also recently branched out into commercial work, directing and editing a "how-to" video with local camera lens maker Lensbabies, and doing some freelance editing work with Portland-based Engaging Media. I've included some video samples in my blog's gallery, including one video I shot in Kenya in March of 2007.
I'm an adaptable, low maintenance, quick-witted guy who can get along with just about anybody. At the end of the day, I'm a storyteller. That can feel like a blessing or a curse, depending upon the deadline, but there it is.
My wife's also a writer and teacher-in-training and with have two fantastic preschool aged boys, life keeps hopping.
